London-based, Nottingham-born multidisciplinary artist, composer and architect Emma-Kate Matthews releases the final remix in a series of 8 remixes of her 2020 EP Far Flung, making up the album Flung Further. Her remix of her own track 'Forgot To Swim' presents a gentle expansion of the original, teasing out the melodic and swaggering rhythmic potential within the abstract stems which feature field recordings of metallic objects and tones generated by resonant Brass instruments, made by Emma-Kate herself.
The Far Flung EP, a complex collage of dance floor adjacent electronica that gets you thinking and moving, was released on Algebra Records at the end of 2020 as a series of limited edition transparent lathe cut 12"s with handmade textile artwork and audio-reactive visuals.
Emma-Kate Matthews - Far Flung EP has been played by Rebecca Gaskell on BBC Radio 3, Nic Luscombe (Late Junction) on CIC Tokyo Radio and by Dampé on Rinse FM with a 1 hour guest mix by EKM on Rinse FM on the 30th of October. Emma-Kate's animated artwork for 'Dreams Again' was nominated for the 2021 Lumen Prize for art and technology and merges footage of a digitally simulated cloth falling through space, with footage generated by artificial intelligence using a GAN (Generative Adversarial Network).
Each remix includes new video art by Emma-Kate, produced using 3D, audio reactive simulation software.
The Far Flung EP explores the contrasting styles of synthesised versus acoustic sounds, field recordings versus musical motifs and digital versus analogue techniques for producing and manipulating sounds. Eerie drones are interwoven with complex upbeat rhythms, deep layered harmonies and erratic melodies to form an elastic sonic fabric which oscillates between moments of lightweight sonic ambiguity and highly-charged musical statements.
The remixes have been released once per-week ahead of the full album release on the 26th of November 2021 with remixes from artists Julia-Sophie, Casually Here, Dampé, Eye Measure, Sunplus, Ben McDonnell, Heavenly Stems and Emma-Kate herself.
Emma-Kate Matthews is composing a spatially-aware orchestral piece for the London Symphony Orchestra as part of the prestigious Panufnik Project, which is due for performance in March 2022. She is also currently completing her PhD on the subject of 'reciprocities between music and architecture' at the Bartlett School of Architecture where she is also currently a senior lecturer.
Algebra Records is run by Casually Here (Nic Nell) to support emerging artists both practically & collegiately, & to help foster artistic community & context. Upcoming releases include artists Sami El-Enany, Liam Hutton, ELY and the next Casually Here album.
