Following the electronic odyssey and homage to Antoine de Saint Exupéry - the mini-album Saint Ex, we have a new album from Willie Gibson – The Halls Of Piranesi.
Willie Gibson's modular synth and sequencer based work is driven not only by the technology he uses, but also the rich and varied sources of inspiration he finds.
The Halls Of Piranesi was inspired by both the 18th century draughtsman and architect and the recent wonderful novel by Suzanna Clarke, exploring the cavernous domain of mysterious chambers. Lots of sequenced synths and dark evolving pads.
The Shadow Over Innsmouth – inspired by the dark and eerie story by H P Lovecraft about the seaport town of Innsmouth and the strange creatures that inhabit it. More dark synths and sequencers and a narrator who imparts the secrets of the town to a stranger but fears being overheard.
Octatonic Jam – this was a single take using the amazing Analogue Solutions Impulse Command synthesizer. It is based around an octatonic scale which was a favourite of the French composer Olivier Messiaen. There is a video of the performance on the Willie Gibson YouTube channel - https:// youtu.be/ZBjvOHyw3lU .
Number Stations – inspired by The Conet Project – a collection of recordings of the so-called number stations extensively used in the Cold War to impart coded messages to spies, and used repeated tunes and idents to alert agents of incoming code.
Synths used include Eurorack Modular, Studio Electronics SE-02, Analogue Solutions Impulse Command, plus a few soft synths. No Behringer synths or equipment were used in the making of this album!
