London-based pianist/producer Dan Nicholls (of Y-OTIS) introduces his new album project "Mattering And Meaning" to be released by We Jazz Records on 13 August. Nicholls's music uses acoustic piano as its key element while the music transports the instrument into a new existence that sounds remarkably natural and organic, while displaying a strong kinship with the world of abstract electronic music. It feels simplistic to say the music utilises piano loops and field recordings in forming a deeply fascinating ambient jazz work but on the surface level, that is what's happening. At the same time, there's so much more at play here. Dan's music sounds at once otherworldly and immensely inviting. The first single to appear ahead of the album is "Breathe", out on 28 May.
