Berto Pisano composed this score for the 1966 Italian spy movie of the same name. All tracks are previously unreleased with the exception of the opening credits theme, “Ma se tu vorrai”, which features an otherwise unidentified singer named Ella Gaby and originally came out on a now super-rare 7 inch. The soundtrack, and the opening credits theme in particular, gives more than a nod to the UK mod scene of the 60s and the soul-jazz sound of James Bond theme songs, with its broken-beat, downtempo vibes (something that eventually developed into trip-hop), its luxurious orchestration and perfect arrangement for the spy genre. Pisano’s approach is clearly reminiscent of Lalo Schifrin and John Barry, without being slavishly imitative of or inferior to either. “Ma se tu vorrai” is reprised in several easy-listening arrangements and, at the same time, alternated with suspenseful pieces that, without developing a specific theme, use brass, strings and military-like drums to convey a sense of impending danger.
