CoOp Presents is incredibly proud to present the first track from a forthcoming compilation album put together by Allysha Joy. This 14-track LP gives us a solid glimpse into the current wave of Antipodean bruk / broken beat artists, with this first taster coming courtesy of Setwun.
Allysha explains “the connection began with a guest mix for CoOp Presents Worldwide FM radio show. I was asked to guest on the show, so pulled together some heavy unreleased and unmastered “Australian” broken sounds. I immediately called Horatio Luna, Close Counters and Setwun, some of my nearest and dearest inspirations and collaborators to get them in the mix! Within 24 hours I had a brand new beat from Setwun called ‘H.B.Y’…
After linking in over the music and working on some collaborations, Alex Phountzi and IG Culture asked me to put together this compilation. The way that this music just effortlessly and lyrically fell together, is a testament to the broken beat undercurrent that runs within the jazz and dance music scene down-under. ‘They’re Energised’ connects a scene of deeply talented and inspired musicians, collectively shaping the new wave of uniquely “Australian” bruk and broken beat music!”
Setwun hails from Eora (Sydney) and has been steadily garnering a fanbase over the past few years amongst tastemakers across the globe, with previous supporters including Gilles Peterson, Bradley Zero, Steve Spacek, Alex Nut and Touching Bass. His track ‘H.B.Y.’ bounces along around the 130bpm mark - horn and vocal stabs punch in & out over a sweet liquid groove complete with a rolling bassline, synths and rhodes.
He says “When Allysha asked me if I had any tunes to run on a guest spot on the CoOp show on Worldwide FM a year or so back, I decided to sit down and write something fresh. I love the idea of radio being a place to play dubs and one offs. Particularly when we’re sharing between a community. Little secret weapons for the homies.
At the time, it had been a long while since I’d stepped foot inside a club and moved to the music myself. So, I took it as an opportunity to make something I’d like to dance to when the chance presented itself again. I’d also fallen back into a deep love for early to mid 00’s r&b and hip hop at the time, which I think comes through across the track.”
‘H.B.Y.’ will be on all digital platforms October 28th, whilst ‘They’re Energised’ is released mid-November 2022 on double vinyl and digital worldwide via CoOp Presents.
