Pioneering UK band, Grupo X, who are celebrating 21 years together, have been back in the studio, creating original, soulful Afro-Latin music. Something Going On is the first release from these sessions, with a new album due out later in the year.
Something Going On, written by Jonny Enright and Sean Corby, maintains Grupo X's reputation for dancefloor-friendly tunes with a soulful sensibility and a Latin twist. In a stellar lineup, Grupo X vocalist, Lisa Millett, is on magical form, telling the tale of a partner obsessed with Obeah and superstition.
The EP features two contrasting remixes; the first, a pulsating Northern Soul makeover from talented flautist/saxophonist/producer, Chip Wickham, whose new album Shamal Wind (Lovemonk Records) follows up his acclaimed 2017 jazz album, La Sombra, lauded by the likes of Gilles Peterson, Craig Charles and Paul Murphy.
The other remix is provided by up-and-coming, Leeds-based producer, Jeano, who puts an uplifting Drum & Bass spin on the song.
Completing the package is a soulful new version of the beautiful Grupo X track, Little Bit Better Than That, which again features the amazing and varied voice of lead singer, Lisa Millett.
Grupo X first came to prominence in the early 2000s with releases such as Brand New Love, X-Perience and Sunshine, which brought them to the attention of DJs such as Gilles Peterson, Louie Vega and Bobbito Garcia. Grupo X track, Jonny's Bugalu was the soundtrack to a national TV commercial across the USA in 2007.
Grupo X have continued to perform and record, playing around Europe and reaching new audiences in the USA, Japan and Latin America.
Grupo X's 2011 album, As Hills Go By was described as, "epic, rootsy and, with singer Lisa Millett out front, often spine-tingling." by Blues and Soul Magazine.
BBC 6 Music's Lauren Laverne called the lead single, Waiting All Day, "beautiful!".
DJ Craig Charles (BBC 6Music) described the 2016 track, Get Through To You (from Grupo X's Songs From Our Latin Soul album) as "one of the biggest hitters so far".
Grupo X live dates for Spring/Summer 2018 to be announced soon.
*This release is dedicated to the memory of Grupo X's beloved friend and musical collaborator, Johnny Machin (1969-2018).
