Chantal Michelle continues her sound explorations with 66 Rue L, a fascinating composition for piano, field recordings, saxophones and tin drum, collaborating closely with legendary Mexican instrumentalist and improviser Germán Bringas. Split into three movements, 66 Rue L traces a sonic pathway on which reverberant piano, Bringas’s saxophone and resonant field recordings intertwine to soporific, transportive effect. Close to 30 minutes in length, the composition traverses between calming and unsettling passages, as Michelle toys with the listeners’ perceptions and expectations, expertly steering the piece into unexpected territories.
