Growing up in East Germany in the 80s access to western music was restricted. But close to the border, you could pick up signals from BFBS, Radio Luxembourg, or RIAS and record the broadcasts onto cassette tapes. Apart from the usual Pop, Rock and Disco something new emerged over those airwaves - a different beat altogether. It was raw, strange, thrilling. The music was mostly instrumental, built around relentless drum patterns and warped, artificially manipulated sounds. It was as if this music had a life of its own, unlike anything I've heard. Artists like Mr. Fingers, Tyree Cooper, Fast Eddie, Marshall Jefferson, Chip E., Joe Smooth, Phuture, Farley Jackmaster Funk, Jesse Saunders, Todd Terry, and DJ Pierre. Their sound felt futuristic and underground, somehow speaking to our hidden desire for something bigger, something free. This music became my soundtrack of the Wall coming down in Berlin and everywhere else, at least that's what it felt like. This record is trying to get back there. Maybe to start all over again.
