Aisha Orazbayeva and Naomi Sato link up for this richly textured reading of John Cage´s Two4, a late work from the composer's series of Number Pieces. The release follows recent records from SN Variations featuring music by Giacinto Scelsi, Adrian Corker and Chris Watson among others.The Quietus will write a feature on the piece and subsequent concert at the Gagosian Gallery in mid June.
Aisha Orazbayeva is a Kazakh-born, London-based violinist renowned for her interpretations of contemporary music and radical approach to old repertoire. She has released two critically acclaimed solo albums on Nonclassical and PRAH recordings featuring her own compositions, and has performed internationally in venues such as New York's Carnegie Hall and Tokyo's Superdeluxe. Her ongoing collaboration with the artist, writer and director of Forced Entertainment Tim Etchells resulted in the release of their first vinyl EP Seeping Through on PRAH recordings, a BBC Radio 3 Late Junction session and numerous performances around Europe. Other recent releases include Bryn Harrison´s Receiving the Approaching Memory with Mark Knoop on Another Timbre and Scelsi´s Duo for violin and cello on SN Variations. Aisha regularly performs with ensembles Plus-Minus and Apartment House. Her third solo album, Telemann´s Fantasias played using contemporary/extended violin techniques, was released in November 2016.
Naomi Sato studied shō with Ko Ishikawa at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music. She collaborates with many composers and has played with Teo Loevendie (composer, saxophone), Harry Starreveld (flute), Merlijn Twaalfhoven (composer, viola), Olivier Sliepen (saxophone), Laura Carmichael (clarinet), Netherlands Vocaal Laboratorium, and Nieuw Ensemble (Amsterdam, Netherlands). She has given chamber music concerts in Japan, Netherlands, France, Germany, Denmark and Luxembourg with member of her chamber music grope Duo X Project, improvisation trio Karooshi (sax, harp, contrabass), and Vlinder Vangers (sho + electronics). And she gave lecture concerts about the eMusic scene in Amsterdam through Japanese traditional music in Conservatorium van Amsterdam (2000), North Eastern University (2005) and UM Dartmouth (2005). As a saxophonist she has played with Philharmonic Orchestra of Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music (Tokyo, Japan), Orchestre de l'Academie Européenne de Musique with Pierre Boulez (Aix-en Provence, France), Ensemble Lucilin (Luxembourg), the Residentie Orkest (The Hague, Netherlands), the Ives Ensemble (Zaandam, Netherlands).er Pieces performed on violin & sho - plus a very nicely programmed London launch event next month by Aisha Orazbayeva, in support of the charity Proemaid.
