12 years on from it’s original release, Bass Clef re-presents his debut album “A Smile Is A Curve Which Straightens Most Things”, originally released in 2007 on Blank Tapes, in the very early days of dubstep. There were only a handful of Dubstep albums at that point, and almost no live acts.
The album got good reviews in Mixmag, Kruger, XLR8R, Plan B, The Word, Time Out, The Imdependant, Music Week, The Fly, Knowledge magazine and was even one of The Sun’s Top Ten Dance Albums of the year, although quite possibly because they ran out of albums they knew at number 9.
Radio support came from seminal BBC Radio 3 show Mixing It and Maryanne Hobbs on Radio 1.
The singles released from the album got DJ support from Mr Scruff, Domu / Bugz in the attic, and tracks were played by Appleblim at Plastic People and Geiom at DMZ. Those were wonderful moments for me.
“Cannot Be Straightened” had a life of it’s own after release, it was vocalled by Durrty Goodz on his “Axiom Ep” after he picked up a white label at Uptown Records.
In a bizarre twist, American Superstar DJ Bassnectar made a bootleg of the tune, combined with an MIA acapella.
After the demise of Blank Tapes, Bass Clef has taken back the rights to all his early releases on the label. The album now comes slightly expanded with the two tracks originally featured on his debut ep., “Hackney Centralist”
