"Hard Lessons Hardly Learned / Holy Days Wholly Dazed" is the new 2-track release from Bass Clef. It's a follow-up to "111 Angelic MIDI Cascade", released earlier in the year by Slip Imprint (Mica Levi, Olly Coates) which was described by The Wire as “a success on it’s own terms and beyond” and praised in Resident Advisor as "a magical alchemy—an otherworldly and original sound that also allows for heartfelt expression".
The two extended pieces here are in the sprit of Bass Clef's previous release on Open Hand Real Flames, 2018's "(minimum wage)(zero hours)(infinite forest)" of which Tinymixtapes said "3 extended pieces...make the vital link between insistence and playfulness, patience and payload in tandem".
Bass Clef has had a long and storied career since debuting as rlf in 2003 for XL’s Rex Records (alongside The Avalanches and Cut Copy), before widening the edges of dubstep (as it narrowed) with releases and remixes for Blank Tapes, Skull Disco, Punch Drunk and Idel Hands. Then in the 2010s going on to make records both more experimental and more dancefloor for Pan, Alter Stock, Trilogy Tapes and Happy Skull to name only a few. Bass Clef has collaborated with Charles Hayward, Laura Cannell, Eric Cheneaux, Heatsick and Peter Zummo, though not all at the same time.
