The music of Throwing Shade, AKA DJ and producer Nabihah Iqbal, defies easy categorization. To date, she's offered up a range of vivid, off-kilter tracks that blur the boundaries between cosmic R&B, skewed space pop, glistening downtempo soundscapes and mangled, synth laden grime.
Iqbal is rightly regarded as a rising star, having already dropped essential 12" singles on Kassem Mosse's Ominira imprint and, most recently, No Pain In Pop. Here she makes her debut for Bristol's Happy Skull imprint with a set of tracks that take her trademark sound closer towards the dancefloor, whilst retaining her uniquely intergalactic aesthetic.
'Chancer' sets the tone, layering crystalline melodies, intoxicating vocal snippets and outer space chords with a snappy, jacking drum machine groove that impressively transforms the chicago blueprint.
Iqbal breaks up the beats further on 'Blanx', whose spooky melodies and cascading synths perfectly compliment her eccentric, jazz inspired drum programming.
Happy Skull collaborator Kowton provides a sterling remix of 'Chancer', turning the spacious, vibrant original into a dense chunk of no-holds barred techno. Its arguably one of thr most techno tracks Kowton has done.
This release has gained DJ support from Ben UFO, Tessela, Pangaea, Berceuse Heroique, Rub 'n' Tug, and Kowton amongst others. It has been played on BBC Radio 1, Berlin Community Radio, and NTS. The release was premiered on the Boiler room, was featured in The Fader magazine, and was given a great review from Resident Advisor.
